Poet
and composer. He was born with the century, on July 15th,1900 in a
country house in Malcolm, near Lujan (Buenos Aires). His father worked
there as a butler. He was the tenth son of an Italian family. When he was
six his family moved to Floresta but before that they lived for a short
period in Lujan. When he was young (1918) he worked at the National
Education Council with Leopoldo Lugones. He composed using a pseudonymous,
Rosendo Luna. He also composed in association with Juan Carlos Cobian.
When he met Carlos Gardel, he had an important repertory: Gardel
recordered 23 songs between 1925-1933. He became Gardel's best composed.
In order to stand out the relationship that he had with Gardel he
said:"I do not have any photograph with Gardel but he sang 23
tangos of mine, and they are like 23 photographs". His first tango was
"Pompas de jabon"(Soap bubbles) and others of his songs were
"Al mundo le falta un tornillo"(The world has a screw loose),
"Rubi"(Ruby), "Tres esquinas" (Three corners),
"Tres amigos"(Three friends); "La he visto llorar"(I
have seen her cried), "Almita herida"(Little soul hurt),
"Naipe"(Card), "Cuando tallan los recuerdos" (When
the rememberances appeared), "Shusheta", "Muñeca
Brava"(Brave doll), "Che Papusa oí", "Madame
Ivonne", "Por la vuelta"(To come back), "Igual que
una sombra"(The same as a shadow), "Ave de paso"(Passinng
bird), "Copas, amigos, besos"(Drinks,friends,
kisses),"Dolor Milonguero","Boedo y San Juan",
"Se llamaba Eduardo Arolas"(He was called Eduardo Arolas",
"Santa Milonguita", "Nieblas del riachuelo"(Fog of
the rivulet), "Mi Madrigal" (My Madrigal), "Pico de
oro" (Beak of gold), "Brumas" (Mist), "A mi no me
hablen de penas" (Do not talk about sorrows to me). He wrote more
than three hundred tangos. his ten best tangos are:"Anclado en
Paris"(Anchored in Paris), "Nunca tuvo novio"(She never
had a boyfriend),"La casita de mis viejos"(My parents' house),
"Nostalgias" (Nostalgy), "Nieblas del riachuelo"(Fog of the
rivulet),"Por la vuelta"(To come back), "Los
mareados"(The seasicks), "El
cuarteador,"Garua"(Drizzle) He published three
poems:"Canciones grises"(Grey songs) (1926); "La luna de
bajo fondo" (The under botton moon)(1940),"El viento que lleva
y trae" (The wind that takes and brings) (1945). Books:"El
debut de Carlos Gardel"(The debut of Carlos Gardel); "La
historia del tango en Paris"(The history of the tango in Paris);
"Mis Recuerdos"(My memories). Theatral author colaborating
with Felix Pelayo: "La Epopeya del tango"( The tangos' epopee)
and "La baba del diablo" ( The devil's drivel) and also
"El romance de los vagos" (The vagabond's romance) with German
Ziclis, "El cantor de Buenos Aires"( The Buenos Aires singer)
with Alberto Ballarini and with Martin Lemos "Los cuentos de un
principe"(A Prince's tales). In 1987 he was declared Illustrious
citizen of Buenos Aires city. In 1996 he was distinguished as Emeritis
Personality of Argentinian Culture. He died in Buenos Aires on
December 3rd, 1999 at the age of 99.
