Homage
to a big tango man
Forty
years ago died the director Carlos Di Sarli
Carlos Di Sarli
- Certainly
he was one of the biggest artists from the 40's. Cayetano Di Sarli
Russomano, Carlos Di Sarli, was born in Bahia Blanca on January
7th, 1903. He played with the orchestra of Anselmo Arieta and
Osvaldo Fresedo. He
was called "El seņor del Tango" (The Tango man). He
studied at the Williams conservatory in Bahia Blanca, and he made his
debut when he was 13 and a musical comedy took him around the
country to play the piano. Three years later he made a
presentation as a piano soloist in a cinema of La Pampa. He was wearing his
clasic brown glasses, which hid the scar of an accident (A casual
shoot in his father shop when he was 13). He formed his first
orchestra in Bahia Blanca, he acted in "Cafe Express",
"Cafe Moka" and he played in some provinces and composed his first tango "Meditacion" (Meditation). The
following year he went to Buenos Aires where he acted in some
small cafes. In 1925 he formed his first sextet, and he made his
debut in "Cabaret Chantecler" where he played only four
days. In 1929 he recorded his first album in Victor company, and he
made radial shows both in El Mundo radio and
Belgrano
radio. He was a romantic composer as we can see in
"Milonguero Viejo" (Old dancer of popular song) and
"Bahia Blanca" and "A la gran Muņeca" (To the
big doll), instrumental songs. He left many tangos as "Loco
lindo" (Nice crazy) (Lyrics by Conrado Nale Roxlo); "Otra
vez carnaval" (Carnival again) (Lyrics by Reynaldo Pignataro);
"Chiquetera" (Lyrics by Guillermo Nacarelli);
"Verdemar" (Green sea)(Lyrics by Jose Maria Contursi, 1943);
"Al pan pan y al vino vino" (To call a spade a spade)
(Lyrics by Rodolfo Sciamerella); "Cayorda" (Lyrics by Luis
Vaccarezza); "Asi era mi novia" ( My girlfriend was like
this); "Nido Gaucho" (Gaucho nest) (1942); "Bien
Frappe" (1941); "Corazon"( Heart) (1939);
"Whisky" (1951); "Porteņo y bailarin" (Porteņo
and dancer); "La capilla blanca" (The white hood);
"En un beso la vida" (In a kiss the life); "Juan
porteņo" (all with Hector Marco) are tangos that belong to
popular music. He left the direction in 1959 because he was
suffering
from cancer which killed him om January 12th, 1960.
