| Homage to a big man.
"El
Polaco" Goyeneche was born on January 29th, 1926.
He
was born on January 29th 1926 in Savedra suburb. His
father wrote tangos, his mother liked Gardel and his uncle, Roberto
Emilio Goyeneche was an excellent piano player. Goyeneche was called
"Polaco" by a friend because he had light blue eyes and blonde
hair. In 1944 he won a contest of new voices in "Club Federal
Argentino de Nuņez" and this was his first presentation as a vocalist. He also worked as
a lorry driver, taxi driver and bus driver. The
first orchestra that he ever sang with was Raul Kaplun (violin player). It was the
contest
prize. He made his debut in Belgrano Radio and he recorded some songs
but they were never sold. He continued playing with Horacio Salgan who
proposed him
to sing with Angel "Paya" Diaz. With Salgan he performed in
different places and he made some recordings. Some of the most important
were "Un cielo para dos"( A sky for two) and "Alma de
loca" (Crazy woman soul). Later, in 1955, he integrated Anibal Troilo's
orchestra, in Jorge Casal's place. In this orchestra he had a big
success which allowed him to start his career as a soloist. During his
staying in this orchestra he sang "Tinta roja" (Red ink);
"A Homero" (To Homero); "El motivo" (The motive);
"Pa'lo que te va a durar"; "En esta tarde gris" (In
this grey afternoon); "El bulin de la calle Ayacuyo" (The room
in Ayacuyo's street). But one day Pichuco realized that the rythm that
the orchestra had did not allow the singer to develop all his talent
and adviced him to go on singing as a soloist. For this reason Goyeneche
left the orchestra and in
1964 he reached the highest point of his career.
He
recorded a lot of albums and L.P.s and he sang more
songs. Goyeneche sang tangos that were clasics as: "Che
bandoneon"; "Maria" and "Garua" (Dizzle). He
sang "Viejo Almacen" (Old grocery) and "Caņo 14"
with the quartet of Hector Stampone. A lot of artists played with him
during his soloist career: Orquesta Tipica
Porteņa, Armando Pontier, Roberto Pansera, Astor Piazzolla, Atilio
Stampone, Sexteto Tango and others. In 1984 he participated in the
"Tango Argentino" in Europe and America. He also appeared in two
films: "Sur" (South) and "El exilio de Gardel"
(Gardel's exile). Roberto Goyeneche was an exceptional artist and he
created a different style with his baritone voice. He transmitted the
feelings of the city with his totterings. On August 27th, 1994, El
Polaco closed his eyes for ever, but he showed to be an unique musician
during all his life. In the newspaper first page said "The last big
singer has gone". That was true...
