Pedro
Maffia was born on August 28th, 1899 in Balvanera.
He had a connection with music since he was a boy: first
through the piano but some years later, when he heard "Pichuco"
playing a "Bandoneon", he decided to start
playing that instrument, so he began taking bandoneon lessons with Pepin Piazza.
That would be one of his best decisions since, many years
later he would be remembered as the best bandoneon player.
In 1913 he started playing at parties and cafes but as he was
very young he was not taken into account. So he decided to travel
around the country and perform on his own. In 1917 Jose Ricardo
discovered Maffia, and convinced Roberto Firpo of letting the
young artist play in his orchestra. This was one of Maffia´s
career brightest points. He stopped
playing in 1921 but he went on playing when they recorded
albums for about 5 years. In
1922 he played in Juan Carlos Cobian's sextet and he went on
when Cobian was reemplaced by Julio De Caro. His mates were
Leopoldo Thompsom, Francisco and Emilio De Caro, Luis
Petruccelli, and some time later Pedro Laurenz. In 1926 he
formed his own orchestra with Cayetano Puglisi, Alfredo De
Franco, Francisco De Lorenzo, Elvino Vardaro and Osvaldo
Pugliese. The following year he was a bandoneon teacher in a
conservatory he directed together with Piana. In the late 30's he
formed a
group: "Los 5 ases Pebeco" with Pedro Laurenz,
Ciriaco Ortiz, Carlos Marcucci and Sebastian Piana. Among his
singers were Francisco Fiorentino (Fiore); Hector Pacheco and
Pedro Lauga. He recorded for the following companies: Columbia,
Brunswick, Odeon, Victor and T.K. As a composer he wrote the
following songs: "Pelele"; "Triste" (Sad);
"Diablito" (Little devil); "La mariposa"
(The butterfly); "Amurado"; "Sentencia"
(Veredict); "Amarguras" (Bitterness); "Pobre
gallo bataraz" ( Poor batarz cock); "Pura maña";
"Noches de reyes" (Wise men from the East night);
"Te aconsejo que me olvides" (I advice you to forget
me); "Organito de mi barrio" (Pipe organ from my
suburb);
"Taconeando"; "Ventarron" (Stong
wind); "Manganga"; "Cornetin"; "No
aflojes" (Go on); "Misa rea";
"Bandoneon"; "Berretines";
"Mineral"(Mineral); "Arco iris"(Rainbow)
and "Tiny". He died on October 16th, 1967 in Flores,
where he had lived all his life. Pedro Maffia was an innovator,
a revolutionary and he was the example for many great artists,
such as Troilo and Piazzola; according to the historians and the
audience he was one of the most prestigious players. "El portal
del tango" wants to pay homage to Pedro Maffia on the day of his
birth and we want to send our sincere greetings to his family.
