El
Portal del Tango wants to take a look at the career of one of the most
important orchestra directors that Tango has given us.
This
Argentine musician was born in Buenos Aires, in Almagro neighbourhood,
within a large family of musicians. He started his musical studies with
his father Miguel Requena, and continued them with teacher María
Caporale. Later on, he took lessons with teachers Vicente Scaramuzza in
piano, and Erwin Lewutcher and Juan Schultiz in harmony, counterpoint
and orchestral direction.
Since very young, he was determined to decipher that Buenos Aires
mystery: its music. In that way, and having a classic education, he
began to unveil tango’s magic.
During
fourteen years he was the Musical Director of Channel 11, and around the
same time, he directed the recording company Microfón Argentina, for
which he recorded over 300 albums, and 30 as a soloist musician.
Between
1973 and 1976, he directed the Cosquín Festival, in Córdoba province,
and the Poncho Festival in Catamarca. He also was the producer and
representative in Argentina of the Japanese company Global Records.
In 1978, he directed the OTI Festival, in Santiago de Chile. He even
entered the film industry, since he wrote music for several films,
although the most remembered and awarded was the one he wrote for “Los
siete locos” (“The seven crazy people”). In 1981, he wrote the
music for a TV series produced by the Mexican channel Televisa, which
was dedicated to Carlos Gardel.
During 1982 and 1983, Requena was the Director of the Buenos Aires
Folkloric Orchestra, and took over the direction of the Juan de Dios
Filiberto Music National Orchestra.
In 1986, his inspiration gave birth to the group he called Tango
Session, with which he took tango around America, Asia, Africa, Europe
and Oceania, playing in 61 countries. In 1988, they performed at the
Homage to Federico García Lorca, in Grenada, Spain, and at the Tango
Meeting, in Portugal.
In
our country, Requena directed the Symphonic Orchestras of Tucumán,
Córdoba and Buenos Aires. In Spain, he was the director of the
Symphonic Orchestra and of the Manuel de Falla Chorus, in Grenada.
In
1999, he made a 66-concert tour around the most important cities in the
United States. In 2000, our Tango Ambassador, travels to Japan for the
sixth time. In that country, he offered 45 concerts to a people who
loves our music, and was officially decorated because of his career
there.
He
was a member of most of the orchestras of his time, and accompanied a
lot of singers. He worked restlessly as a director, composer and musical
arranger, in Argentina and in the world. He made a lot of recordings
throughout his career, and one of them is a CD produce with the
Symphonic Orchestras of Entre Ríos and Santa Fe, which was awarded in
Germany.
Nowadays,
he is a member of the SADAIC (Argentine authors association) Artistic
Commission.
Osvaldo Requena believes in what he does, and continues a deep search
around his obsession, tango. It is a way of honouring his family for
him, the music-lovers family to which he, so proudly, came from.
At last, we have to mention that this is just a brief summary of this
musician’s career. The effect of his creations, his excellent musical
taste and his professionalism, are the reasons why Osvaldo Requena’s
performances are so often required from countries all around the world,
contributing, in this way, with the job of keeping Tango’s flame lit.
