Homage to a great tango man


January 18th,1986 died, Edmundo Rivero

He was one of the best singers and gave "Lunfardo" great publicity

 

His name was Leonel Edmundo Rivero, he was born on June 8th,1912 in Buenos aires. He was a singer, a composer and a guitar player. He studied singing in his teenage years at the National Conservatory of Belgrano suburb, his low tone of voice was not fashionable at that time because in the 40's, tango singers all had tenor voices. He started a duo with his sister and  sang with Agustin Irusta. He made some concerts for Radio Cultura but he played Spanish and Classical music. He made his debut as a tango singer with Jose De Caro and in 1935 he sang  with Julio de Caro. After his participation in Cesar Bo's orchestra as a guitar player, in 1944. The following year he played in Horacio Salgan´s orchestra.Unfortunately they could not record any album because they had problems with the recording company. Some time later Anibal Troilo asked him to replace Alberto Marino.During that time he had the chance to record an album and his first tango was "Yira, yira" in 1947. Then he started his career as a soloist, being one of the most important voices, he travelled around Spain, EEUU; Japan and he recorded a lot of albums. He sang tangos like:"Desde la cana"(From prison); "Amablemente"(Kindly); "Linea 9"(Line 9); "Para vos hermano tango"(To you Brother tango);"¿Quien sino tu?(Who else but you); "Pobre rico"(Poor rich); "Malon de ausencia"(Malon of absence); "A Buenos Aires"(To Buenos Aires); "La toalla mojada"(The wet towell) and "Cafetin de Buenos Aires"(Buenos Aires Bar); "Confesión" (Confession);"Sur"(South); "El deschave". He also wrote an autobiographic book to defend "lunfardo". The book was called "Una luz de almacen"(A grocery light) and he appeared on different films as "Fortin Alto" (Tall fortin); "Pampa y cielo"(Pampa and sky) and "El Ingles de los guesos": He was a member of the Lunfardo Institute and he died when he was 74 years old, on January 18th, 1986
