Laura
Ana Merello was born in San Telmo on October 11th 1904.
When she was ten she was already working as a cowherd in a
country house in Buenos Aires province. In 1920, she
started working as an actress. Everything began when she
was walking in front of the Avenida theatre and saw a
handbill asking for girls to dance in front of the
audience. She did the audience and she was accepted for the play
"Las virgenes de Teres" ("Teres´s
virgins") which was unsuccessful.
Her success started when she sang the Tango "Trago
Amargo" ("Bitter drink"). She also worked in the theatre
and in musical comedies. As an actress she made her
debut replacing Olinda Bozán in
"El rancho del hermano" ("The brother's
ranch").
She started to be very popular with "El conventillo
de la paloma". In the 30's she popularized two
"rancheras": "Los amores en la crisis"
("Love in crisis times") and "Donde hay un
mango" ("Where is the money"), both of them talked
about
the economic situation of the country. She also appeared
on some films:
"Morir en su ley" ("To die in his law"), (1947);
"Arrabalera" (1950); "Pasó en mi
barrio" ("It happened in my suburb") (1951);
"Gaucho" (1953) and "Para vestir
Santos". But her best film was "Los
Isleros" ("The islanders"). When Peron's goverment
fell she did not have any work, she also had less and less
possibilities and she had to start working in amusement
parks and circus
so she decided to travel to Mexico, where she acted in an
Eugene O'Neil's play. In 1957 la "Reina del
tango" ("The Tango Queen") as she was named
by the "El Mundo" newspaper, came back to our
country and she worked on television, where she did "Tangos en mi recuerdo"
("Tangos in my memory"),
some series and theatral versions. As a singer she sang,
for 5 years, in "Sabados circulares" with
"Pipo"Mancera in channel 13.
"About her we can
say she was a bit excessive, but he had an enormous efficacy. She belongs to
the family of actresses who do not only have something to tell but
also something to suggest. She is impulsive in her
dramatic note, and she knows how to break naturally. She
travels through all the transitions with easiness. She is
said to be well educated; she is, at least, intelligent. We do not know
aboout her education.Tita is a distant woman. She is a bit
"desgarbada". She is always sincere. She loves
to show us San Telmo, which was her cradle.
According to a magazine, our
"Reina del tango" ("The Tango Queen"):
"Tita is
"Town", is impulse, is the style of woman that
the women admire and men are afraid of: intelligent,
sagacious and simple"
"She is
"Demistificadora" (person that breaks the myths)
of myths that became a myth".
