![]() The
story of the plane
D’Arienzo was very old, but he maintained his sense of humour, which was one of his most remarkable characteristics. On certain occasion, a Japanese businessman went to see and made him an offer that, because of its economic proposal, could not be refused. The businessman wanted D’Arienzo to reunite his orchestra and make a tour around Japan. Juan thanked him very much and told him that he had always been afraid of travelling by plane, and because of that, he could not accept the offer. The Japanese businessman, very upset for not having had an affirmative answer, returned to his country. The Argentine press found out about this, and everyone wanted to talk with D’Arienzo. Finally, the director accepted to be interviewed by a very famous reporter of that time. The journalist asked him: “D’Arienzo, is it true that you turned down an excellent offer to perform in Japan?”. The director gave him exactly the same answer he had given to the Japanese businessman. And the reporter asked him: “But if your time hasn’t come yet, why are you so concerned about flying?” D’Arienzo, with his characteristic wit, told him: “All right, let’s say that you are right, that my time hasn’t come yet. But what if, on the contrary, the pilot’s time has come? What do I have to do with that?”.
