During its career, this orchestra has always had brilliant artists. The orchestra was born at a contest organised by the Armenonville cabaret to form its own orchestra, and its musicians were selected by the habitual customers’ choice. Some of the innovations with which this orchestra contributed was the adding of violins and the recuperation of the almost forgotten flute, that allowed to balance the heavy sound of piano in the instrumental group. Some time later, contrabass player Leopoldo Thompson joined the orchestra. He was the creator of what was known as the “canyengue effect” (hitting with the open hand and the contrabass-bow on the strings of the instrument) which later on would be adopted by other players. Firpo’s orchestra performed at many places, such as Palais de Glace, Armenonville, Royal Pigall and many others. By 1926, their recordings for Doble Nacional company, were great successes.
