He was born on September 20th, 1890. Although there is no certainty about his birth place, there are two versions. One of them says that he was born in Bahia Blanca, and the other one says that his birthplace was La Plata. He is well known for having written “Cara sucia” (“Dirty face”) and “El poeta” (“The poet”). Before moving to Buenos Aires he worked as a journalist in Bahia Blanca, and once he was living in Buenos Aires he worked in “La Montaña”. He lived in San Cristobal neighborhood, near Greco and Canaro families. He became great friends with Francisco, Canaro´s older son, and they even worked together. Caruso wrote in 1917 the lyrics for “Cara sucia”, which was very recognized in Tango circle. He also wrote a lot of musical scores: they are said to be over one hundred and fifty, although it is known that there are some scores missing. At least thirty of them were written for his friend Francisco, also known as “Pirincho”; and thirty eight of them were recorded by Carlos Gardel, including “Alma de bohemio” (“Bohemian soul”). On October 8th, 1919, Delfina Fuentes and Felipe Panigazzi first sang Caruso´s tango “Nobleza de arrabal” (“Arrabal nobility”). He is said to have written a very refined kind of tango, even Gardel recognized him as one of the best lyricists. He died in Buenos Aires on July 1st, 1931.
