Pianist, composer and director. He was born in San Miguel, Buenos Aires
in 1890. He made his debut in 1908 at the Royal Café playing in a trio in
which also played Francisco Canaro and Vicente Loduca. Before that he used
to perform in bars in La Boca or Barracas. His biggest success as a
composer was the song called “Lita”. Some time later Pascual Contursi
added lyrics to that song and changed its name into “Mi noche triste”
(“My sad night”), which would be sang by Carlos Gardel in 1917. He was
also the author of “La yerra” (“The cattle branding”), “El gorrión”
(“The sparrow”), “Mi noche alegre” (“My joyful night”) and
“Como quieras” (“As you like it”), but none of these compositions
of any other had the success that he had reached with “Mi noche
triste” (“My sad night”). He died on July 8th, 1932.
