Singer,
piano player and composer. His name was Carlos Perez de la Riestra, he
was born in 1907 in a country house in La Pampa. When he was a child he studied in
province academies
and when he finished his elementary school he was sent to a boaarding school
in La Plata. In 1922 his family moved to Belgrano suburb, Buenos Aires.In
the city he studied piano and composition in the conservatory of Rafael
Ortega y Castronuovo. He
sang in his graduation party and Del Ponte, who was the director of Radio
Cultura, listened to him and invited him
to sing in that radio station. He accepted and made his debut in 1924 as a
piano player and
singer. In 1925 he recorded his first album and sang with Francisco
Canaro and Francisco Lomuto. He appeared on some films (at the beginning of
the spoken cinema in Argentina), in 1935 he is convoked by Argentina Sono Film to act
in the film "El alma de bandoneon" ("The bandoneon soul"), later
he appeared on "Puerto nuevo" ("New port") (1936); "Carnaval de
antaño" ("Carnival of old") (1940). Charlo went on singing till
the ends of the 60's. He sang during forty years in radio stations and
then on television.
He was famous in La Habana and Portugal. As composer some of his most
important works were:"Ave
de paso" ("Passing bird"); "Rondando tu esquina"
("Walking
around your corner") with Enrique Cadícamo; "Costurerita"
("Scamstress") and "Fueye" with Celedonio Flores; the popular
song "Oro y plata" ("Gold and silver") and the vals "Tu pálida
voz" ("Your pale voice") with Homero Manzi;"Sin lágrimas"
("Without tears") and "Sin ella" ("Without her")
with José María Contursi; and "Tortura" ("Rack") with Cátulo Castillo. The
songs "Rencor" ("Rancor") by Adolfo R. Aviles and specially
"Las cuarenta" ("The forties") by Francisco Gorrindo
are perhaps his most brilliant interpretations.
His career was successful. Carlos Perez de la Riestra, Charlo, died on
October 30th, 1990.
