Pascual Contursi was born in Chivilcoy, Buenos Aires, in 1888. He worked
as a seller in a shoe shop and he also was a puppeteer. He began his
singing career adding lyrics to some famous songs, like: “El flete”
(“The charter”) by Vicente Greco, and “El matasanos” (“The
doctor”) by Francisco Canaro. But he became popular when he added the
lyrics to Samuel Castriota´s tango “Lita” and changed its name into
“Mi noche triste” (“My sad night”), which would later be sang by
Carlos Gardel. A new tango style was born: that in which stories talked
about feelings and emotions, in which lyrics had the same importance as
music. Contursi made tango more human and sensitive, letting characters
cry over their loses. Some of his compositions are: “De vuelta al bulín”
(“Back to the house”), with a humorous touch, “La han visto con
otro” (“She has been seen with someone else”), “Ventanita de
arrabal” (“Arrabal little window”) and “El motivo” (“The
reason”), where he describes a woman´s abandonment. Pascual Contursi
died on May 29th, 1932.
