- He was born in Buenos Aires, on July 19th, 1941; but forty
days after his birth he was taken to San Francisco (Córdoba). His real
name was Abelardo González. He was discovered in a bar in San Francisco
by Luis Mela, who convinced him to come to Buenos Aires and make an
audition for Pugliese, who was looking for a singer. There were three
hundred applicants, and he was the chosen one. On the way to his first
performance, on October 10th, 1964, Julio Jorge Nelson
suggested he should change his name. Abel Córdoba sang in Pugliese´s
orchestra for more than thirty years, until Pugliese died. With the
orchestra he did eleven tours: to New York, Madrid, Paris, Helsinki,
Amsterdam and Japan. He also sang during the performance at the Teatro Colón
(Colón Theatre) on December, 1985. With an excellent voice and great
looks, he always has a loving memory about his “teacher”, as he calls
Pugliese. With the orchestra he sang over 80 songs, 50 of which are
recorded, four of them in duet with Jorge Maciel and two with Adrián
Guida. He has declared to be Hugo del Carril, Oscar Larroca and Edmundo
Rivero´s admirer, but his
model is Carlos Gardel. Since the orchestra broke up, he has pursued a
soloist career.
